MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: WHEN THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN, BE SURE TO BE THERE

• GLEN HELEN OFFERS A $10,000 PRO PURSE FOR THE MAY 16 “STOPWATCH NATIONAL” WARM-UP RACE

Josh Mosiman talks to Bud Feldkamp, the owner of Glen Helen Raceway, about the upcoming “Stopwatch National” on Thursday, May 16th. Originally this was scheduled to be a one-lap timed challenge, but they decided to turn it into a two-moto race format, with 30-minute plus 1 lap motos for the 250 and 450 pros combined. They will pay the top ten, with the winner getting $4000 (which is what a 250 East/West  Supercross rider gets for finishing second in an AMA Supercross and more than a fourth place rider gets in a 450 Supercross).

Also coming up on March 30 is the 2024 Wiseco World Two-Stroke Championship. It  pays big money to the Pasha 125 Pro class, Pasha Over-30 125 Pro class and Pasha Over-50 125 Pro class (Pasha 125 Pro bikes can run 150cc engines). Of course, the stand-alone Open Pro class will be paying purse money also.

• MXA VIDEO: 2024 YAMAHA YZ125 TWO-STROKE TEST

• MXA RETRO TEST: 2002 YAMAHA YZ250 STROKE?

The YZ250 retro test is from the October 2022 issue of MXA
QUESTION ONE: IS THE 2002 ENGINE FAST?
Yes. Yamaha’s engineers have done the impossible. Not only have they pumped more ponies out of the YZ250 engine, but they managed to broaden the powerband, increase the torque and supplement the duration of the pulling power. What does all that mean in plain English? It pulls hard, over a longer time, with more grunt.
QUESTION TWO: WHAT DOES THE POWER REMIND US OF?
That’s easy. The 2002 Yamaha’s power delivery mimics the great Honda CR250 engines of the ’80s and early ‘90s. Honda dominated that era, not because they made the most horsepower or revved the farthest, but because they timed the release of their horsepower so that each gear’s effectiveness was maximized. What’s that mean in plain English? It’s not how big your peak numbers are, but how much breadth the powerband has. Oh, by the way, the 2002 Yamaha YZ250 makes big peak numbers.
QUESTION THREE: HOW DID YAMAHA DO IT?
Without being disrespectful, they used backyard engineering! To broadening their powerband Yamaha’s engineers didn’t depend on whiz-bang electronics, exotic metals or patent-pending porting. Nope, they utilized the same grab bag of tricks that backyard tuners have been using for years. What’s that mean in plain English? (1) They added a flywheel weight to meter the engine’s response time and increase flywheel inertia on the top-end. (2) They put a 5mm spacer behind the reed block for more low and mid. (3) They shortened the silencer by 35mm to crispen up the hit. (4) They switched from epoxy reeds to carbon fiber reed petals. (5) The opened up the airbox to get more air in.
QUESTION FOUR: IS THERE A DOWNSIDE TO THE YZ POWERBAND?
Yes. When your avowed goal is to broaden the powerband, increase the torque and amplify the pulling power, you have to give something up. And that something is the vice versa of “broad”, “torque” and “duration”. What does that mean in plain English? The 2002  doesn’t hit as hard, rev as rapidly or turn over as quick as the 2001. This year’s engine is more of a workhorse compared to last year’s quarter horse.
QUESTION FIVE: WHICH YZ250 ENGINE DO WE PREFER?
That’s a hard question. We loved last year’s engine. It had the only fully-realized powerband in the 250 class. It could be hammered, dogged, cruised, coasted or massaged in any gear. For every difficult situation the 2001 engine had am answer. It was great!
We are sad to give up the 2001’s peculiar charms, but we are willing to because the 2002 has more potential to go fast.
QUESTION SIX: WHAT ABOUT THE JETTING?
In stock trim it’s a little fat for the summer heat, but should be fine when the temperatures cool down. Yamaha richen the jetting a tad over last year, but we were able to make all necessary jetting changes with the clip position (dropping it to compensate of the heat). In the end, these are the settings we ran.
Mainjet: 178
Pilot jet: 50
Needle: N3EJ
Slide: 7.0
Air screw: 1 turn out
Clip: 5th (2nd stock)
Slide: 7.0
QUESTION SEVEN: HOW GOOD IS THE GEARING
It’s well set-up for most tracks, but several MXA test riders gear it down by adding one tooth for more drive out of second and third. Switching to a 51 is worth trying if your track has sand, deep loam, hills or puts a premium on hard acceleration in third gear.
QUESTION EIGHT: WHAT ARE THE BEST FORKS SETTINGS?
What was our best setting? For hard-core racing we recommend this set-up:
Spring rate….0.43 kg/mm
Oil height…135mm
Compression…13 clicks out (11 stock)
Rebound…11 clicks out (9 stock)
Fork leg height…3mm up
Notes: The biggest rap against previous YZ forks has been bottoming. No more! The new forks feel firmer. In fact, they feel too firm when they are new and it takes about two hours to break them in. Be patient. They just keep getting better.
QUESTION NINE: WHAT WAS OUR BEST SHOCK SETTING?.
What was our best setting?
Spring rate:  4.8 kg/mm
Race sag: 100mm
Hi-compression: 1-3/8 turns (1-1/4 stock)
Lo-compression: 8 clicks
Rebound: 12 clicks out
Notes: Yamaha’s high-speed compression clicker (the large dial) is very sensitive to adjustment. Make small (1/8th turn) changes. Use the high-speed adjuster to set the bikes fore/aft bias at speed.
QUESTION TEN:  HOW DOES THE SUSPENSION WORK?
We give Yamaha credit for their take on suspension set-up. They haven’t been pussy-footing around with spring rates or damping. Yamaha was the first manufacturer to look at what local racers were doing, and then make those changes in production. As a result, they have settings that are more real world than most manufacturers–especially their spring rates.
Yamaha did make some small changes to their set-up for 2002. The rising rate has been altered to make it softer in the initial part of the stroke, but no different at the end.
So, how does the YZ250 suspension feel? Stiffer. Yes, we know that we just said that Yamaha tried to soften up the first part of the stroke, but ignore that. The 2002 YZ250 has a much firmer feel than the 2001 and it has very little to do with the suspension components. The new feel emanates from the chassis. Yamaha stiffened the steering head juncture and beefed up the backbone. The corresponding increase in lateral rigidity is instantly noticed (both in the suspension and in the handling). The new feel takes some getting used to. The firmer feel changes the way the YZ sits, aided by the ergonomic impact of the flatter saddle, and, as a result, it feels higher in the rear than last year’s YZ.
QUESTION 11: HOW DOES IT HANDLE?
It doesn’t handle as well as the 200. Sad, but true. It does everything you ask it to do, but not with the boyish glee of the 2001. It corners adequately, but doesn’t turn in as quickly. For some style of tracks, the handling is actually better. Which tracks? Sand and loam tracks favor stiffer chassis, while hard pack seems to appreciate a more absorbent feel.
In a large part, the ability of the 2001 to tuck into corners, bound through braking bumps and make knife-edge transitions could be credited to its slightly soft set-up. As the 2002 suspension breaks in, and we are talking about over a relatively long period of time, we’re confident that the 2002 will begin to feel more like the 2001. But, in brand-new fettle, it’s stiffer, sits higher in the rear, is very sensitive to damping changes and less willing to cut-and-slice.
QUESTION 12: WHAT DID WE HATE?
The hate list:
(1) Rear shock guard: The little rubber flap that hangs down from the airbox to protect the shock from roost drove the MXA test crew crazy. Every time we rolled the bike backwards it would suck into the rear knobs.
(2) Front brake hose: The first thing that every hard-core YZ250 owner does is switch to Honda-style front brake routing. Yamaha can’t because Honda has a patent on where a brake hose can go. But, the owner isn’t bound by a Japanese patent.
(3) Front tire: The Dunlop 739FA has seen better days–actually, its never seen a better day. It has a big push.
(4) Warning labels: The only way to get a Yamaha warning label off is with a heat gun (from underneath the fender).
(5) Triple clamps: We prefer adjustable bar mounts, but Yamaha did move the bar position 10mm farther forward.
(6) Rear fender: It looks like something KTM would have designed.
QUESTION 13: WHAT DID WE LIKE?
The like list:
(1) On-the-fly clutch adjuster: Turn it forward and the clutch gets tighter and vice versa. It’s handy.
(2) Side panels: Yamaha is the only manufacturer to understand that number plates have to be big enough to accept numbers.
(3) Tunability: If you want your 2002 YZ250 to be faster, harder hitting, more aggressive and pro level, swap the 2002 flywheel for a 2001 unit–then hang on.
(4) Radiator wings: Yamaha designed their new gas tank and radiator wings to improve engine cooling. We give them kudos for putting some thought into air flow. Plus, your knee won’t catch on the rear corner of the wing anymore.
QUESTION 14: WHAT DO WE REALLY THINK?
In plain English? This is the most effective motocross weapon since the glory days of Honda. It has a broad, easy-to-use and powerful engine (that can be breathed on with the aid of a flywheel puller). Although the stiffer chassis and firmer feel lessen some of the YZ’s rider friendly feel–it has more pro-level potential. It is a known quantity–and it has been known as the best bike in the 250 class.

SOCAL RACERS BID FARWELL TO RANDEL FOUT

Randel Fout, with his golden locks flowing out of his helmet, was a member of the MXA wrecking crew and we will miss him.

MXA test rider Randel Fout was a one-of-a kind guy, he was super friendly, lent a helping hand to any racer in need, was incredibly fast for a 66-year old (proven by the fact that he is the current Over-65 World Vet Champion). For the MXA guys he was a fountain of mechanical know-how. He took meticulous notes on every bike he tested, kept our test bikes in excellent condition and could  fix flats and change tires in record time. Unfortunately, Randel passed away two weeks ago while competing in a cross-country race at Glen Helen Raceway.

The “Saturday at the Glen” racers did a Parade Lap for Randel Fout on the day of his beachside Memorial.

For those who didn’t have a chance to say a proper goodbye, Randel’s family threw a beach party at Oceanside Harbor Beach this past Saturday, just a stones throw from the sailboat where Randel lived,. Glen Helen’s Lori Wilson, put all the races that held the most riders who had close connections to Randel early in the “Saturday at the Glen” motocross schedule so they could lrace their motos and leave the track in time to get to the beach. In addition, there was a a parade lap in honor of Randel with over 100 riders doing a lap of honor in Randel’s name.

The three sons, Jake (left), Josh (right) and Logan (center).

This photo of Randel with his youngest son, Logan, was on display in Randel’s race van.

A friend of Randel’s from Wisconsin sent this photo of Randel on his Maico back in the 1970s.

Randel’s family flew in from Illinois and Wisconsin to be with his sons Josh, Jake and Logan and for a chance to meet Randel’s friends. There was a photo display inside Randel’s van, special Randel Fout memorial T-shirts and a Kawasaki KX450 with his original AMA Pro number on it at the beach get-together.

There were special Randel Fout T-shirts for his friends at the Oceanside Memorial.

As a fitting farewell, the attendees waded out into the ocean to pay their respects to Randel’s surfing background by splashing water into the air. The water was 58 degrees.

Logan Fout says goodbye to his dad.

Of course, most of the attention went to those loved ones he left behind, his brothers, friends, racing buddies and family, but most of all to young Logan Fout, who at 11 years old has had the most important man in his life taken from him. In order to help secure Logan’s future, a Go Fund Me page has been set up specifically for Logan, and the generosity of his motocross friends has been amazing.
