WATCH THE HANGTOWN NATIONAL: !F YOU MISSED THIS RACE, YOU MISSED SOMETHING SPECIAL
Big things happened at the 2024 Hangtown 250/450 National. Jett Lawrence suffered his first big 450 get-off and, even though he got up off the ground, the couldn’t make it back into a points paying position (finishing 24th in the first moto), while Chase Sexton looked like a totally different rider in the first moto as he worked his way to the front to be the man who stopped Jett’s 450 National win streak at 24 motos (if you combined last year’s Nationals with this year’s).
Jett came out for the second moto, but he was seriously detuned, although he ran near the front for the first half of the moto. However, he faded back to a sixth place finiish in the second moto and got lapped by Sexton.
But the big story was taking place way behind behind the Jett saga in moto two. Chase Sexton spun out on the first lap and went down. He re-entered the race in 40th place and to the amazement of all, he did what hasn’t happened since the the 2003 Budds Creek 125 National (when James Stewart passed every rider in the race to win the 125 class) and the 2006 Millville 450 National (when Rick Carmichael lapped the entire field). Sexton rode like a man possessed, passing 39 riders and catching KTM teammate Aaron Plessinger on the very last lap to go 1-1 (to win his first AMA 450 National since 2022).
Meanwhile, Haiden Deegan backed up his Pala 250 Nationals win by taking the first moto win, while passing Levi Kitchen and Chance Hymas. The second moto didn’t go as well for Haiden, but it was still an impressive performance as he got kicked over the bars, into the air and spun like a top, while leading the moto. KTM’s Tom Vialle blitzed past the fallen Star Yamaha rider to take the moto win, but Deegan got going quickly to hold onto second place to earn a 1-2 overall victory.
