MOTOCROSS ACTION MID-WEEK REPORT

#WHIPITWEDNESDAY

Rider: Dean Wilson

In his final season of AMA Supercross racing, we look back at a stylish picture of Dean Wilson while on board the Factory Red Bull KTM team in 2016. Dean, now a veteran of the class currently riding for the FirePower Honda has quite the resumè to look back on as he winds down with this seventeen-round series. Coming from the Cannidae Pet Foods Kawasaki in amateur racing, Dean then stepped up to the professional level securing a ride with Pro Circuit Kawasaki. His rookie season in 2010 was nothing short of outstanding, Dean raced the 250 East in his inaugural season and had multiple top-five finishes with two podiums including a second at the round in ST. Louis. He would go on to place fourth overall in the following motocross season and take home the Rookie of the Year award. The very next year he would become runner-up in the 2011 Supercross series but would ultimately get the job done in Motocross where he was able to dominate the class and take home a championship. Now 14 years later from the initial start of racing Dean has decided to close the AMA chapter of his life, and focus on the World Supercross Championship (SMX) and the Australian Supercorss Championship, where he is the current Champion.. He has missed a couple of seasons throughout the years mostly in motocross but has lined up and raced in a professional event every year for 14 straight. Dean has been a staple to the sport and will be awesome to see where he takes it after this season.

TWO-STROKE SPOTLIGHT | CHRISTOPHER OVREBO’S 2003 CR250

Howdy MXA,
I submitted my YZ a while back (might be close to 10 years now LoL) and you guys featured it. Much appreciated. A couple of months ago I decided I wanted a last-gen Honda CR250. I found a mostly stock 2003 in my area. I paid a little more than I thought it was worth, but I think that might just be me not wanting to accept the market prices of them at the moment.

Over the course of about a month, I put a on Polisport 22′ update kit and 23′ graphics on it. Went with a China wheelset (KKE), Renthal Fatbars, new Pro Circuit pipe, wave rotors, and a bunch of little random things like billet China brake line hold downs, carbon fiber rear brake guards,,ect. The one thing I’m especially proud of though, that I think is the icing on the cake, is the custom billet side case covers all the way from England.

ANAHEIM ONE GRIT

Cooper Webb avoiding roost on the same hip jump that would eventually take him down.

Cooper Webb showed a lot of speed at the start of this season, riding a lot like the champion we had seen in the past. In his first heat race of the night, he showed aggression against Jett Lawrence who all thought would just dominate the evening, Cooper would then set the tone for the evening as he was able to hold off a hard charge from Jett and ultimately push him into a mistake, giving Cooper his first heat race win of the year. In the 450 main event Cooper did not get as good of a start as he wanted, but climbed his way up to third where he would pressure Jason Anderson for the second position. With just a few laps to go, Cooper would go down hard after getting a kicked over a hip jumped that had bit a couple riders that night. Cooper’s bike smashed him into the ground, a crash that would be night-ending for most, Cooper instantly popped back up and rushed to his bike. Because of his quick awareness, he was able to manage a sixth position on the night and keep his title hopes alive.

Julien Beaumer with the green lights on his forks to signify that he is the leader of the race.

The eye opener of the 250 West class was Julien Beaumer in his first Supercross. Julien started the day by riding in the “B” qualifying group where he would put down a faster time than the “A” group, this wass extremely impressive as the track had not been broken in making the corners slick and the jumps extremely steep. From morning to evening, Julien was quick, grabbing  holeshots including one in the 250 West main event. Though he would make a small mistake towards the end of the 250 main he still was able to secure the sixth position on the evening, A great start to what looks to be a promising career.

MXA RIDER TRIVIA

Jeff Emig 1999Who is the rider on the Yamaha? Can you name this rider? Answer at the bottom of the page.

SAN FRANCISCO TRACK MAP

Headed to Oracle Park this weekend for the second round of the 2024 Supercross series. The track looks technical with two long rhythm sections that are back-to-back. There is only one whoop section this weekend, but we can expect them to be a bit larger than Anaheim whoops. Of course, there is a sand section down the back straight for added passing points. It will be interesting to see who is able to gain control of this track quickly as it does not seem easy.

ANAHEIM 1 SUPERCROSS RAW PRESS DAY

ASK THE MXPERTS: “SHOULD I UPGRADE FROM MY 300 TO A 300?”

Fix your one-year-old KTM 300SX before trying to jump ship to the next big thing.

GOING NEW OR STAYING PUT

Dear MXA,
I currently have a 2022 KTM 250SX set up with the 300SX kit. It has a Twisted Development head, Lectron carb and Pro Circuit exhaust. I recently discovered that the cylinder plating was coming off. I have two choices, buy a new 300cc kit or purchase a 2023 KTM 300SX. My math tells me that I might be better off saving the $1000 for the 300cc kit and applying it to buying a 2023 300SX. In MXA’s opinion, which option would get me a better race bike? The 2022 platform converted to a 300SX or the 2023 KTM 300SX?

If it were us, we’d send the old 300cc kit cylinder to Millennium Technologies to have it re-plated with their Nickel Silicon Carbide plating. They’ve repaired lots of cylinders for MXA and do a great job. By sticking with your existing 2022 300SX engine kit, you save a lot of money over buying a $9200 2023 KTM 300SX—not to mention that your Pro Circuit exhaust, Lectron Carb and Twisted Development head will not work on the 2023 KTM 300SX. Plus, your 2022 KTM 250SX (converted to 300cc) is 7 pounds lighter than the electric-start, fuel-injected 2023 KTM 300SX.

ANAHEIM 1 SUPERCROSS BEST IN THE PITS

MAKING HISTORY AGAIN

This past weekend at Anaheim one, Jett was able to become the first Supercross rookie to win the main event in his debut to the 450 class (if you don’t count the first rider to win an AMA Supercross back in 1974). This did not come easy as the 450 class this year is full of  riders capable of taking the win. Jett got the holeshot in the 450 main and held strong to come away with the win.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: THE RETURN OF JASON ANDERSON

“Anaheim one for me has gone multiple different ways. I’ve won here before, been on the podium before, and have done terribly here before. It was nice to get this one out of the way and it’s a positive to be on the podium. It sets the tone and I’m ready to get to work and keep up the tone.”
