MOTOCROSS ACTION MID-WEEK REPORT
#WHIPITWEDNESDAY
Rider: Marvin Musquin
One of the nicest riders you’ll find at the track, Marvin Musquin has also had an extensive career. Starting in the European championships on 85’s Marvin won multiple times followed by a victory on 125’s at the Junior World Championships. His career continued gaining momentum when he won the MX-2 World Championship in 2009 and defended his title in 2010. Marvin however had his sights set on the American motocross and Supercross series and came to the States in 2011 joining into the motocross series. Unfortunately in his first series, he would have unfortunate luck as another rider would go down in front of him. The bike shot up into Marvin dislocating his thumb in the process. The next year, he would grab his first win and fifth overall in the series. The following Supercross series he would race the East division and get four wins and second overall in the series. In 2015 Marvin would get the job done and win the 250 East Supercross title one of the many highlights of his career. Through the remaining years, Marvin was always upfront finishing second and third multiple times, but he was never able to grab the 450 championship. Marvin nowadays can be seen testing different KTM’s at local racer or seen cruising the pits at Supercross.
JETT LAWRENCE WINS DAYTONA
Jett Lawrence claimed his third victory of the season this past weekend in Daytona and extended his points lead by ten over Cooper Webb, who placed fourth. Though Jett made it look easy, this win did not come easily as he had to make his way past some of the top competitors to move into the number one spot. Chase Sexton grabbed the holeshot and was able to lead a lot of the main event, followed by Eli Tomac. However, for Jett Lawrence,, he made swift passes and got into first. From there, he opened up a gap on the rest of the field and won by almost six seconds.
TOM VIALLE’S FIRST VICTORY
Tom Vialle claimed his first victory in the States this past weekend. He did not start up front, but with the technical conditions and a quickly deteriorating track, he was able to make the necessary moves to get into the lead. Tom had been improving throughout the East series, claiming his first podium last weekend in Arlington. He built off of that momentum and was able to grab the win in Daytona. Tom now only sits three points out of the lead, tied with Haiden Deegan. This marks a great recovery after a tough start to the season when he crashed in Detroit.
FEELING BETTER ON THE TRACK
Chase Sexton looked to be on top of his game once again in Daytona. After battling injury for the past few weekends, it seems his hand has healed enough for him to put in a strong effort in Daytona. He grabbed the holeshot and led a lot of the main event, only to be passed by Jett Lawrence, who went on to win, and then Eli Tomac in the closing laps of the race. Chase now sits thirteen points out of the lead and has a great chance of recovery throughout the rest of the season. He managed the injury well and did not put himself at too much of a deficit.

MXA FANTASY LEAGUE: THE DAYTONA SUPERCROSS WINNER SCORED 291 POINTS
Daytona remains one of the premier events, and this year was no exception. Jett Lawrence secured his third win of the season, widening his lead over Cooper Webb by ten points. Eli Tomac, who has clinched victories at Daytona in the past few years, finished second, although there was concern regarding his bike, which was seen smoking due to what the team identified as a clutch issue. Predicting rider positions is notoriously challenging, adding an element of excitement to fantasy Supercross. While many anticipated Eli Tomac would dominate, a significant number of players had their bets on Cooper Webb. Surprisingly, Jett Lawrence, despite his successful season, was not the favored pick for Daytona.
DAYTONA FANTASY WINNER “Whoop Dee Doo”
Fantasy player with the Username “Whoop Dee Doo” won the prize courtesy of FMF with an astounding 291 points! In total, there were five riders picked in the correct position as well as correctly guessing both the gap of the leader and the position of riders lapped.
250 CLASS PREDICTIONS
In the 250 class, “Whoop Dee Doo” selected Cameron McAdoo for the win. McAdoo earned 23 points in fantasy as he finished second in the event. Tom Vialle was chosen for second place and received 26 points as the winner of the event. Seth Hammaker, correctly predicted to finish third, did indeed take third place in the race, earning 31 points, including a ten-point bonus for the accurate prediction. Pierce Brown was the fourth pick, resulting in 18 points as he finished fifth in the race. Max Anstie, chosen for fifth place, received 0 points for finishing outside the top six in eighth position. Lastly, the sixth-place pick, Haiden Deegan, garnered 19 points for his fourth-place finish. This brings the total to 117 points awarded for the 250 class in the MXA Fantasy League.
450 CLASS PREDICTIONS
In the 450 class, “Whoop Dee Doo” selected Cooper Webb for the win, which resulted in 19 points due to his fourth-place finish. Eli Tomac was accurately predicted to finish second, earning 33 points, including a ten-point bonus. Chase Sexton was also correctly predicted for third place, totaling 31 points with the ten-point bonus included. The fourth-place pick, Jett Lawrence, won the event and received 26 points. The fifth-place prediction was Ken Roczen, who did finish fifth, awarding 28 points, including the ten-point bonus. Lastly, the sixth-place pick, Justin Cooper, was correctly predicted, giving 27 points including the ten-point bonus. As a result, a total of 164 points were awarded in the 450 class.
These picks in total accumulated 281 points but because the race gap and position of riders lapped were also correct, an additional ten points were added totaling 291 points and winning the overall in the MXA Fantasy League. As you can see five riders were predicted correctly giving many bonus points, but a lot of points were still left on the table. Even though you may be at a deficit heading into an event, there is a chance of quick points gained on a fellow competitor. With only round eight being completed there is still a long season ahead to make up valuable points.

ASK THE MXPERTS: WHO INVENTED THE IDEA OF CENTRALIZATION OF MASS?
The 2010 Yamaha YZ450F was the first production motocross bike to go all out to address centralization of mass.
THE FOUNDING FATHER OF THE CENTRALIZATION OF MASS
Dear MXperts,
Every creative idea has to start somewhere, and given that motocross has a short history, relative to other invention-heavy enterprises, I was working on a paper about “centralization of mass” on motorcycles for my engineering class when it came to me that someone, somewhere must have pioneered the idea and built a proof-of-concept machine. But, I’ve never heard a name attached to the idea. I am relying on MXA to help me put a punctuation mark on my paper.
Who knows how many engineers worked on “centralization of mass” concepts in secrecy back at the factory, but as for building a proof-of-concept test unit, that honor goes to an engineer and motocross racer named Peter Dill. Peter built Honda a concept CR250 with the majority of the weight centered in the chassis back in the 1980s. Honda didn’t move on Dill’s idea. But, decades later, the idea of putting not only the weight but also the rotating mass of the cams, valves and piston closer to the center of gravity became of prime importance. The ultimate expressions of this were the Jens Elmwall-designed slant-engine Husaberg engine and the rearward-angled 2010–2024 Yamaha YZ450F. Today, every production motorcycle that claims to have “centralized mass” owes a nod of thanks to Peter Dill, who passed away on July 13, 2023.

FLYING THROUGH THE AIR, THIS IS NOT GOOD
Haiden Deegan had a scary crash this past weekend at Daytona in his first qualifying session. Haiden was setting up for a triple when he cross-rutted up the face sending the rear end of the bike out sideways and pitching his front end down. He immediately hit the eject button and jumped the remainder of the triple without the motorcycle. Fortunately, he did not sustain any serious injuries and he stated that just his “butt cheeks” were sore from how he landed. He was able to rebound and finished fourth on the evening.
