MOTOCROSS ACTION MID-WEEK REPORT

#WHIPITWEDNESDAY

Mike LaRocco

Rider: Mike LaRocco

Mike LaRocco had one of the longest careers in Supercross and motocross racing. He competed professionally from 1988 to 2006 and had many accomplishments along the way. In his first season in the 125cc class (modern-day 250cc class) he placed second in the series. A major accomplishment for a rookie and a spark to a bright career ahead. In 1993 he became the 500cc national motocross champion, a class that is no longer around. The following year in 1994 he became the 250cc (modern day 450cc) national motocross champion. Mike LaRocco was always known for his consistency. In his racing career, he finished in the top five 145 times with 53 podium appearances. Something that can still be seen to this day is LaRocco’s Leap, a 120ft step-up triple at the world-famous Red Bud track in Michigan. In 1991 LaRocco became the first rider to jump the large triple and he did so on a 125cc. To this day you will see top-level riders not jumping up the large obstacle proving its difficulty. In 2014 Mike LaRocco was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

THREE WINS IN THREE MAINS

Jett Lawrence has definitely found his stride as we passed the midway point of the 2024 Supercross season. Winning the last three races in a row and winning every main event in the triple crown at Indianapolis he has proven that he is the man to beat this season. Jett spoke about how he changed his mentality after his crash in Arlington, and about how he is not pushing the limit trying to dominate the field. This does not mean he’s taking it easy in the slightest because, with a field of riders as deep as we have had this season, you cannot let the competition get the upper hand. His approach is to not push unnecessary jumps or passes if not needed. He realizes the main events are long and there are multiple opportunities for him to make the passes and take the win. So far it has been working out for him.

NEW 250 EAST POINTS LEADER

Cameron McAdoo stayed the most consistent in Indianapolis for the Triple Crown event. Going 1-2-3 in main event finishes was enough to bring home the overall on the weekend. He entered the event with a one-point deficit to Tom Vialle who finished second on the night. Now Cameron McAdoo sits two points ahead of Vialle as they get a week’s break as the series moves back West as they move to Seattle. Tom Vialle and the rest of the field will have time to train and contemplate how to get the red plate back.

NEW FACE IN SEATTLE

Michael Mosiman_Monster_Energy_Yamaha_StarAfter a brief hiatus due to injuries, Michael Mosiman returns on the Star Racing Yamaha in Seattle this weekend. Michael has been a top-level 250 rider since joining the series for Rockstar Husqvarna. He brought home his first win at San Diego riding for the TLD Red Bull GasGas team and things were looking up until stricken with injury. Michael had gone pretty silent during his recovery process but when media outlets saw him at the Star Racing facility they knew something good was in the works. Signing a multi-year deal with the team we expect Michael to use these last few rounds of 250 West as a building block to getting back to race pace. Michael can also bring a big impact to the championship this year if he can get himself in between Jordon Smith and the rest of the field, Jordon has more opportunity to make up valuable points. All in all, it will be nice to have Michael back at the races.

MXA FANTASY LEAGUE: THE WINNER OF THE INDIANAPOLIS SUPERCROSS SCORED 276 POINTS

What a weekend of Triple Crown action in Indianapolis. Jett Lawrence was able to go three for three on main event wins securing himself on the top spot of the podium. Ken Roczen finished second after an impressive 2-2-3 main event scores and Chase Sexton rounded off the podium by going 3-3-2 main event scores. The 250 East class was just as exciting as Cameron McAdoo was able to grab his first overall win of the year and grab the red plate in the process. Tom Vialle would charge to second overall and Haiden Deegan third after he had a mishap in the third main event.

INDIANAPOLIS WINNER WAS “RIDEMAN14”

Rideman14 had the best predictions of the evening in Indianapolis and made a quick jump up in points. Remember you do not have to be a series contender to win the prizes each weekend. It’s the player with the best scores that will get the job done.

250 CLASS PREDICTIONS

Rideman14 had quite the picks for the 250 East class as he picked the top three riders in the correct position. First place he chose Cameron McAdoo who did win the event therefore receiving 36 points including the ten bonus points for the correct pick. In second he had Tom Vialle who also was in the correct position as Tom did finish second in the event giving him 33 points including the ten bonus. In third, he chose Haiden Deegan, again Deegan was in the correct position giving him 31 points including the ten bonus points. In fourth, he chose Seth Hammaker who unfortunately finished eighth on the night and would receive no fantasy points. In fifth he chose Pierce Brown who finished fourth on the night and would receive 19 points and in sixth he picked Coty Schock who who finished in fifth giving him 18 points. A great selection of riders for the 250 class.

450 CLASS PREDICTIONS

The 450 predictions were good as well for Rideman14 as he had one rider in the correct position. First, he chose Chase Sexton for the win but Chase would come up short finishing third giving him 21 fantasy points. Second, he chose Cooper Webb. Webb would only finish fifth on the night after a crash with a lapper and only give 18 fantasy points. In third, he chose Jett Lawrence who ended up winning the event giving him a total of 26 fantasy points. In fourth, he chose Ken Roczen and Ken ended up getting second on the night giving him 23 fantasy points. In fifth he chose Jason Anderson who was fourth in the event and would give 19 fantasy points. And in sixth he chose Aaron Plessinger who did get sixth giving 27 points including the ten bonus points. The results of Rideman14’s picks in the 450 class show he did not miss out on points for a single position, bringing him to victory.

Headed into next week there is still a lot of opportunity to make up points. Though we have seen Jett Lawrence become more dominant in the last few weekends, surprisingly majority of the first-place picks went to Cooper Webb as many believed he would overcome adversity this weekend and take the win. Also, a lot of users chose Eli Tomac to be in the top three which he was unable to obtain. Making the correct predictions is challenging but also an opportunity to make up massive ground on the series leader. Rideman14 was able to get the job done and will be receiving a fresh set of Nacstar wheels.

ASK THE MXPERTS: IN SEARCH OF AN ICONIC HELMET BRAND

Danny Laporte made the Techno helmet famous, but it was never sold in the USA.

Dear MXperts,

I remember a very stylish helmet from the ’80s that was worn by Danny LaPorte when he won the 250  World Championship. What was it called? Where can I get one?

Hakan Carlqvist.

In the 1980s, Danny LaPorte, Mike Guerra, and Hakan Carlqvist wore French-built Techno helmets. They were stylish for the day, but are long gone from the market. They were never sold in the United States.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: COOPER WEBB SPEAKS ABOUT THE LAPPED RIDER IN INDY

“Not a whole lot to say, really. We finished fifth overall at the Indy Triple Crown. That lapper incident in the first main set us back early, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. We’ll regroup and be better for Seattle.”

MXA PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Adam Cianciarulo going down after losing the front end up the face of one of the jumps in Indianapolis. He would be able to remount and continue riding but a hard hit for the #9. In this picture, however, it looks like he is working on his stoppie skills or possibly some ground whips.

MXA PHOTO TRIVIA ANSWER: Jeremy McGrath, who for those that didn’t know, spent some time on board the Suzuki which was a huge move coming from Honda. He would transition to Yamaha after his time there.
