MXA’S WEEKEND NEWS ROUND-UP: LET THEM EAT CAKE & THE 51-YEAR OLD TROPHY PRESENTATION
• ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE MANUFACTURER CAKE FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY
Swedish manufacturer Cake, which exclusively builds electric motorcycles, has reportedly filed for bankruptcy according to Cake CEO Stefan Ytterborn.
Cake was founded in 2016 and became a recognizable brand in the electric motorcycle world with their minimalistic and ultra-modern design ethos. The bankruptcy filing news comes after the company failed to secure $76 million in follow-up funding in a C round that would have given Cake the funds to finalize their expansion plans. Cake said they had 50 percent of the $76 million, but some of the company’s biggest investors, who previously agreed to commit to the other 50 percent, dropped out at the last moment, leaving the Cake with no other option but to file for bankruptcy.
Cake needed the investment after they built a new factory that was scheduled to produce 20,000 vehicles per year by 2025. Obviously, Cake is looking for new investors to get back on track.
• MXA PHOTO OF THE WEEK: THE TROPHY THAT WAS 50 YEARS LATE
Gary Jones was awarded the “Gary Jones Cup” at the 2024 Anaheim 2 Supercross in a big podium presentation. It is especially nice to give Gary the trophy that not only has his three 250 National Championships inscribed on the base, but is, surprisingly enough, named after him.
Gary Jones was the first AMA 250 National Champion, the second-ever 250 National Champion and the third-ever 250 National Champion, winning the titles in 1973, 1974 and 1975. He was also a four-time 250 National Motocross Champion when you add in the 1972 Inter-Am Championship (which the AMA refused to recognise, even though they recognized Dick Burleson’s 1972 500 National Championship from the Trans-AMA series). In a historical glitch, Gary was never awarded a trophy for his first AMA 250 National Championship. Gary never sweated it, he kept right on racing after winning the 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974 250 National Motocross Championships—in another another odd glitch, when Gary was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame, the AMA never contacted him. It wasn’t until years later that he found out about his induction in 2000.
The whole Jones family got to share the honor with Gary. That is his youngest son Justin, standing next to him with his wife and kid, and his oldest son, Gregory, on the right with his wife and kid. Justin Jones led the U.S. Junior Trophy team to the ISDT Championship in 2014, won the WORCS Championship twice, the San Felipe 250 and has won both the Baja 500 and Baja 1000 several times.
Gary is still sponsored by Honda and has been busy winning his class at the Baja 500/1000 and has won ten World Vet Championship (and is the only racer to have ever won the Over-30, Over-40, Over-50, Over-60 and Over-70 World Vet titles). But, Feld and MX Sports decided to right the now 51-year-old wrong by presenting Gary with the perpetual “Gary Jones Cup. Gary will hold on to the Cup wih the name of every 250 Nationla Champion inscribed on the base, the Feld and MXsSports will design a new Garty Jones Cup going forward from the 2024 SMX seasonAMA Supercross series MX Sports and Feld decided to right the wrong and presented Gary with the “Gary Jones Cup.”
