ASK THE MXPERTS: When Is An Engine Not A Motor? Word Play Can Be As Dangerous As Gun Play
WHEN IS AN ENGINE NOT A MOTOR?
Dear MXA,
ÿÿ I have noticed that MXA always uses the word “engine” instead of “motor” like the other magazines. Is there a reason?
ÿÿ Yes, a very good one. A motor is a rotating mechanism powered by electricity, while an engine is a machine that converts fuel into mechanical force. Motors are for blenders, windshield wipers and garage door openers. That thing in your CRF450 is an engine. On the other hand, you can call it whatever you want…we are not the word police. Yes, we know they are called “motorcycles,” but stupidity doesn’t have to be contagious.
