TODAY’S BIRTHDAY BOY: ONCE THE YOUNGEST, WE STILL MISS HIM
Andre Vromans, Georges Jobe, Andre Malherbe and Eric Geboers.
Georges Jobe was born on January 6, 1961. He won his first 250 World Championship is 1980, and was the youngest rider to ever win a world title at 19 years old. He followed up with the 1981 250 crown and the 1987, 1991 and 1992 500 World Championships. In 1988 he moved to the 125 class to try to become the first rider to win World Championships in all three premier classes. He didn’t win the Triple Crown.
The victim of a form of leukemia, Georges Jobe was one of the greatest motocross racer that Belgium ever produced_and it produced DeCoster, Robert, Malherbe, Everts and Geboers. Jobe’s five World Titles put him behind only Stefan Everts (10) and Joel Robert (6) on the win list at the time of his death. In 1980 Georges Jobe became the youngest World Champion in history when he won the 250 World title. Jobe won two 250 Championships and three 500 World titles.
After retiring from professional motocross George kept on racing and in 2007 suffered a terrible accident in Dubai. He was in rehab for many years and even fought skin cancer in 2010. Sadly, in 2012 Georges learned that he was suffering from myelodysplasia, a form of leukemia. George passed away in 2012 and would have been 63 this Saturday.
